Rubber Profile Types and Shapes: P, D, E, U Profiles
Rubber profiles are long elastic elements with a constant cross-section, used in doors, windows, vehicles and industrial equipment for sealing, sound insulation and vibration damping. NUR KAUÇUK MMC manufactures these profiles mainly by extrusion and supplies them in the size and hardness the customer requires.
Main rubber profile shapes
Profiles are usually named by letters after their cross-section. Each shape suits a specific gap and load condition.
P profile
The P profile has a round head and a flat tail. The tail is fixed with adhesive or in a channel, while the round part fills the door or window gap. It is the most common solution for medium-sized gaps.
D profile
The D profile is hollow, shaped like the letter D, and has high compressibility. It fills wide gaps and needs little force to close, so it is preferred on heavy doors.
E profile
The E profile is designed for small and medium gaps. Its three-finger shape seats well in narrow channels and gives effective sealing in thin gaps.
U profile
The U profile is used to cover and protect edges. It slips over a metal or glass edge, serving both a decorative and a protective function.
Material selection
The service life of a profile depends on the chosen compound:
- EPDM — resistant to weather, ozone and UV, ideal for outdoor use.
- NBR — recommended where there is contact with oil and fuel.
- Silicone — stays stable at high and low temperatures, roughly between -50 °C and +200 °C.
For more on materials, see our articles what is EPDM rubber and NBR oil-resistant rubber. We explain how hardness is measured in the Shore hardness article.
Production and quality
Profiles are shaped continuously by the extrusion process without cuts. This ensures a constant cross-section and a smooth surface. Choosing the right hardness and tolerance keeps the profile in shape for a long time.
