Window Seals and Energy Saving: Sealing and EPDM
Windows are one of the largest sources of heat loss in a building, and a large part of this loss occurs from low-quality or worn-out seals. The right window seal seriously reduces energy costs by preventing the leakage of warm and cold air. As NUR KAUÇUK MMC, we manufacture high-performance seals for aluminum and PVC window systems.
How a window seal affects energy saving
A significant part of annual heating costs is related to air lost through invisible gaps along the edge of the window. The elastic sealing seal stops air infiltration by creating a complete closure between the sash and the frame. This leads to heat retention in winter and reduced air conditioning load in summer.
Why EPDM in particular
For window seals, EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is the most widely used material. Its advantages:
- High resistance to ultraviolet rays and ozone — does not harden under the sun for years.
- Wide temperature range: retains its elasticity from approximately -40 °C to +120 °C.
- Excellent sealing against water and moisture.
- Long service life and shape memory.
You can read more detailed information about the properties of EPDM in our article what is EPDM rubber.
Types of window seals
- Sash seal — located between the opening part and the frame and provides the main sealing.
- Glass seal (glazing) — fixes and protects the glass unit within the profile. On this topic, see our article glass glazing seals.
- Middle seal — creates an additional insulation layer in three-chamber systems.
Proper installation rules
Even the highest-quality seal loses its function with incorrect installation. The seal must be seated in the channel without creating tension, but also without leaving it loose. At the corners, the seal should not be cut but continued with a smooth curve, otherwise leakage occurs at the corner. Regular lubrication and cleanliness of the profile extend the seal's life.
Signs of seal wear
Hardening, cracking, discoloration, or a visible gap when the window closes indicate that it is time to replace the seal. Timely replacement restores energy saving.
