Expansion Joint Profiles: Bridge and Construction Joints — NUR KAUÇUK MMC

Every building structure changes its dimensions as a result of temperature, load and ground movement. To safely accommodate these movements, expansion joint profiles are used. These rubber profiles cover movement joints in bridges, buildings and industrial floors, protecting both the structure and the waterproofing. As NUR KAUÇUK MMC, we manufacture expansion joint profiles for various gap sizes.

What is an expansion joint

An expansion joint is a gap intentionally left between two parts of a structure. This gap allows the material to thermally expand and contract. However, an open gap lets water, dust and dirt in — this is precisely where the elastic profile and seal come into play.

Why it is important

If the movement joint is not covered correctly:

Application areas

Thermal expansion compensation

Materials expand when heated and contract when cooled. For example, concrete that elongates in summer at +40 °C contracts in winter at -10 °C. The elastic expansion joint profile absorbs this cyclical movement in a repeatedly reproducible manner and, thanks to shape memory, returns to its previous position. For this reason, durable and highly elastic EPDM is often chosen as the material — you can read about its properties in our article what is EPDM rubber.

Profile selection and installation

When choosing the right profile, it is necessary to take into account the maximum movement amplitude, the gap width, the load type and the environmental conditions. The profile must be reliably fixed in the channel and continued without cutting at corner transitions. The profile is prepared to precise dimensions by the extrusion method — there is information about this process in our article rubber extrusion process. For waterproofing requirements, waterproof sealing systems are useful.
