Valve Seals and Sealing Solutions
Valves are critical components that control the flow of liquid and gas, used everywhere from water supply to the oil and gas industry. The reliable operation of valves depends directly on the quality of their seals. The right seal selection prevents leakage and ensures system safety.
Types of valve seals
A single valve contains several different seal types, each serving a specific function:
- Seat seal — fully shuts off the flow when the valve is closed.
- Stem seal — prevents leakage around the moving stem.
- Body gasket — provides sealing between the parts of the valve body.
Material selection
The material of a valve seal is chosen according to the working fluid, temperature and pressure. EPDM is widely used in water, hot water and steam systems. In oil, fuel and oily environments, NBR excels. For valves operating with high temperatures and aggressive chemicals, Viton (FKM) is recommended.
Hardness and dimensional accuracy
Shore hardness is an important parameter for valve seals. A seal that is too soft may deform under pressure, while one that is too hard may not provide a complete seal. Dimensional accuracy is also critical, since a seal that does not fit the valve seat precisely causes leakage.
Practical recommendations
- Clarify the chemical composition and temperature of the working fluid.
- Account for the maximum operating pressure.
- For frequently operated valves, pay attention to wear resistance.
- Check the material compatibility chart.
