How to Order Rubber by Drawing or Sample
Rubber parts that are not in the standard catalogue can be manufactured from a drawing or a sample. Providing the right information saves both time and cost. This guide explains the ordering process step by step.
Option 1: Ordering from a technical drawing
If you have the exact dimensions of the part, a technical drawing is the best start. The drawing should include:
- All dimensions and tolerances (in mm).
- Cross-section profile and shape.
- Material requirement (EPDM, NBR, Viton, etc.) or operating conditions.
- Shore hardness and colour requirement, if any.
PDF, DWG or even a hand-drawn sketch with dimensions is accepted.
Option 2: Ordering from a sample
If there is no drawing, sending an old or existing sample is enough. From the sample we determine the dimensions, profile and approximate hardness. If the sample is worn, additional information (for example, which groove it seats into) is useful to recover the original dimensions.
Why stating the operating conditions matters
As important as dimensions are the operating conditions. Stating the following ensures the right material is chosen:
- The fluid or chemical in contact.
- Operating temperature (minimum and maximum).
- Pressure and mechanical load.
- Moving or static connection.
Our seal selection guide will further help with material choice.
How the process works
A typical order flow is: receiving the drawing/sample, technical review and material recommendation, quotation, mould or production preparation, a trial sample (if needed) and series production. For small batches or series orders the process may differ. More on custom production: custom rubber manufacturing to order.
