Rubber Bellows and Their Applications — NUR KAUÇUK MMC

A rubber bellows is a folded, accordion-shaped elastic element. Its main job is to protect moving parts from dust, dirt, moisture and mechanical damage while still allowing movement. The bellows compresses, extends and bends, keeping the mechanism inside fully covered. NUR KAUÇUK MMC produces bellows in various sizes and shapes.

How a bellows works

The folds (convolutions) of the bellows let it extend and contract. During movement the folds open and close, allowing the inner component to move freely. At the same time it prevents external factors from getting inside. This property makes the bellows both a protective and a functional element.

Bellows types

Protective (dust) boot

In steering systems, shock absorbers and hydraulic cylinders it protects the shaft from dust and water. It is the most common type in vehicles and heavy machinery.

Motion bellows

Used on moving axles and drive components of machines. It withstands constant bending and vibration.

Construction bellows

Applied in expansion joints and pipelines to compensate for thermal expansion.

Material selection

The long life of a bellows depends on the right material choice:

For more on material selection, see our articles what is EPDM rubber and NBR oil-resistant rubber.

Production method

Bellows are usually produced by moulding, because the complex folded shape requires high precision. The right wall thickness and number of folds determine both the flexibility and the durability of the bellows. In our production process the material compound and mould design are selected to suit the application.
