Marine Rubber Solutions: Hatch, Door and Deck Seals
The marine environment is one of the harshest testing grounds for rubber products. Salt water, constant humidity, strong ultraviolet radiation, temperature variability and mechanical loads put ordinary seals out of service in a short time. As NUR KAUÇUK MMC, we manufacture special seals and rubber solutions for the maritime (marine) sector.
Application areas of marine rubber solutions
On ships and marine structures, rubber elements are critical both in terms of sealing and safety:
- Hatch seals — close the hatches of cargo and engine compartments in a watertight manner.
- Door seals — provide the sealing of cabin and watertight bulkhead doors.
- Deck seals — prevent water from passing into the lower compartments at deck joints.
- Porthole and window seals — maintain the sealing of glass elements.
Marine environment resistance requirements
In marine applications, the choice of material is decisive. The seal must withstand the following factors:
- Salt water and corrosion — the salt concentration must not damage the material.
- UV and ozone — must not harden under the sun for years on the open deck.
- Temperature range — elasticity between approximately -40 °C and +100 °C, from cold waters to a tropical climate.
- Mechanical compression — must retain shape memory during repeated closing and opening.
Which material should be chosen
In terms of resistance to the open environment and salt water, EPDM is the most widely used material — it withstands the effects of UV, ozone and water excellently. In zones that come into contact with oil, fuel and engine compartments, NBR (nitrile rubber) predominates. There is detailed information about the properties of NBR in our article NBR oil-resistant rubber, and about EPDM in our article what is EPDM rubber.
Quality and reliability
In marine conditions, a seal failure creates not only a material loss but also a safety risk. Therefore, marine seals must pass strict quality control. You can get acquainted with our production process on the production page, and with the standards we apply in the quality section.
For various profile and shape requirements, products can be prepared to custom dimensions — for a general approach, see the seal selection guide.
